Portland-by-way-of-Baltimore experimental crust punks Nux Vomica may have released the best record you didn’t hear last year. Asleep in the Ashes (Aborted Society) is a masterfully chaotic collection of melodic death metal, sludge, crust punk, black metal, post-rock and bone-crushing doom, and is one of the few truly unique records I’ve been lucky enough to hear in the past few years.
